Reinforcement for extensions
An extension usually needs reinforcement in more than one place, and each one is a different kind of job. The foundation, the floor slab, and — on a sloping plot — any retaining element the extension steps down into, can each call for a different specification, decided by your engineer’s design rather than one standard answer for “an extension”.
Foundations
Whether an extension’s foundation needs rebar depends on the same factors as any foundation — ground conditions, proximity to trees, made ground, differential depths against the existing house. See our reinforcement for house foundations and footings page for the detail. Extensions add one wrinkle of their own: tying a new foundation into an existing one, at a different depth, is exactly the kind of differential-movement risk that often does call for reinforcement even where a standalone new-build foundation on the same ground might not.
Floor slab
The new floor slab is typically specified the same way as any domestic ground floor — commonly A142 or A193 mesh over a damp-proof membrane and insulation. See our reinforcement for floor slabs page for more detail.
Retaining ground on a sloping plot
Where an extension steps down a slope or is cut into rising ground, a retained section is often needed — reinforced with rebar rather than mesh, sized to the height of ground it retains. See our reinforcement for retaining walls page.
One order, one delivery
Send us everything your engineer has specified for the project — mesh for the slab, a bending schedule for the foundation, a cage for a retaining section — and we’ll quote it as one order rather than you having to piece it together from separate suppliers.
Delivery across the South East
Order before midday the day before for next-day delivery. Our HIAB crane-equipped lorries offload directly to site — let us know about any access restrictions when you request your quote.
Request a quote or upload your drawings
Send us your requirements, or upload drawings and schedules, and we’ll come back with a fast, no-obligation quote covering the whole job.
Reinforcement for extensions — FAQs
Can I order mesh and rebar together for one extension?
Yes — send us everything your engineer has specified for the project and we’ll quote it as a single order.
Does an extension foundation need more reinforcement than a new-build foundation?
Not necessarily more, but often reinforcement for a different reason — tying a new foundation into an existing one at a different depth is a common trigger for reinforcement even where a standalone foundation on the same ground might not need it. Your engineer’s design will confirm this for your project.
What if my extension is on a sloping plot?
A sloping plot often means a retaining element as well as a standard foundation and slab — see our reinforcement for retaining walls page for what’s typically specified.
What’s the cut-off time for next-day delivery?
Order before midday the day before for next-day delivery.
