Reinforcement for house foundations and footings
Whether a foundation needs reinforcing at all is a design decision, not a default. An ordinary strip or trench-fill foundation on stable ground for a typical house extension often needs none. The same foundation on made ground, on shrinkable clay, near a tree, on a slope, or bridging a service run, very often does — usually as continuous horizontal bars near the top and bottom of the trench, sometimes as a full rebar cage where a reinforced concrete raft is used instead.
What decides it
Building control and NHBC guidance both flag specific conditions — proximity to trees and their root zones, variable or made ground, sloping sites, differential foundation depths — where reinforcement bridges the risk of the ground moving unevenly beneath the foundation. None of that can be read off a general rule; it comes from a site investigation and your engineer’s design. What we can tell you is what’s typically specified once that design lands on our desk: T10 to T16 bar is the common range for domestic foundation reinforcement, either as straight lengths or bent to a schedule.
Cut and bent to your schedule
Send us your bending schedule — the shape codes your engineer’s drawing specifies — and we’ll cut, bend and deliver rebar ready to fix, rather than you cutting and bending standard lengths on site. See our reinforcement shape codes guide if you need help reading one. We also supply prefabricated rebar cages, fully assembled or in parts, for foundation designs that call for one.
Delivery across the South East
Order before midday the day before for next-day delivery, available across the whole of our delivery area. Our HIAB crane-equipped lorries offload directly to site, so restricted or awkward access is rarely a problem — let us know at quote stage.

Reinforcement for foundations — FAQs
Do all house foundations need reinforcement?
No. Many ordinary strip and trench-fill foundations on stable ground need none. Reinforcement becomes necessary where the ground itself is the risk — made ground, shrinkable clay, tree proximity, sloping sites — and that’s a decision for your engineer and building control, not a default assumption either way.
What size rebar is typically used in foundations?
T10 to T16 covers most domestic foundation reinforcement, but the exact diameter, spacing and cover are set by your engineer’s design for the specific loads and ground conditions on your site.
Can you cut and bend rebar to my foundation drawing?
Yes — send us your bending schedule or drawing and we’ll provide a fast quote for cut and bent rebar, or a prefabricated cage, delivered ready to fix.
What’s the cut-off time for next-day delivery?
Order before midday the day before for next-day delivery.
