Reinforcement for floor slabs

“Floor slab” covers a wide range of jobs, and the reinforcement scales with it. A domestic ground floor slab, an extension floor, a garage floor and a commercial warehouse slab designed for racking and forklift traffic are all floor slabs — and they call for very different specifications.

Domestic ground floor slabs

A typical domestic ground floor, laid over a damp-proof membrane and insulation, is most often specified in a single layer of A142 or A193 mesh, controlling shrinkage cracking as the slab cures rather than adding load-bearing capacity it doesn’t need for normal domestic use.

Commercial and industrial slabs

A slab designed to take forklift traffic, racking point loads or heavy plant is a different job entirely. These more commonly use A252, A393 or heavier structural fabrics, often across a thicker slab and sometimes reinforced with rebar in addition to mesh where the design calls for it. The loading, subgrade and joint layout for a commercial slab are a structural engineer’s design, not a standard spec — we supply to whatever that design calls for.

Placement and cover

Mesh has to sit at the correct depth within the slab, held on spacers or chairs rather than laid on the ground and covered by the pour, to do the job it’s specified for. This applies whatever the scale of the slab — a domestic floor and an industrial one both fail to get the benefit of their reinforcement if it ends up at the bottom of the pour instead of within it.

What mesh is used in a domestic ground floor slab?

A142 or A193 are the most commonly specified grades for a standard domestic floor, but your engineer or building control will confirm the detail for your specific slab.

Is a commercial slab reinforced differently to a domestic one?

Usually, yes. A slab designed for forklift traffic or racking loads is more commonly specified with heavier fabrics such as A252 or A393, sometimes alongside rebar, and is generally thicker than a domestic floor.
