Reinforcement for patios and paths

Patios and pedestrian paths carry far less load than a driveway, and the reinforcement typically specified reflects that. Rather than a case for going heavier, this is usually the lightest end of the mesh range — enough to control shrinkage cracking in a thinner slab, without the extra cost of a grade sized for vehicle loading it will never see.

Mesh grade commonly specified

A142 is the grade most often used for patios, garden paths and other pedestrian-only concrete, typically in a slab around 75–100mm thick. Some very light, thin pathways are poured without any reinforcement at all — whether yours needs mesh depends on the slab thickness, the sub-base and how it will be used, which your paving contractor or engineer will confirm.

Why it’s still worth specifying

Even in a pedestrian-only slab, mesh helps keep shrinkage cracks tight rather than letting them open up, trip hazards form, or water get in underneath and accelerate frost damage over a few winters. On a domestic budget, A142 is inexpensive relative to the slab as a whole, which is why it’s specified as routine good practice on many patios even where the loading alone wouldn’t strictly demand it.
