Reinforcement for concrete driveways

A driveway slab moves — thermal expansion, minor ground settlement, shrinkage as the concrete cures — and reinforcement mesh holds it together through that movement so cracks stay hairline instead of opening up and letting water in underneath. It isn’t there to add structural strength the slab doesn’t otherwise need; it’s there to control cracking.

Mesh grade commonly specified

Ordinary domestic car driveways are most often specified in A142 or A193 square mesh fabric, laid within a slab that’s typically 100–150mm thick over a properly compacted sub-base. Where a driveway also has to take heavier vehicles — a delivery van, a horsebox, occasional HGV access — A252 or a thicker slab with a heavier fabric is more commonly used. The right choice depends on subgrade, slab thickness and expected loading, which is exactly what a specifier or engineer will confirm for your project.

Placement matters as much as grade

Mesh laid on the ground and covered by wet concrete, rather than lifted onto spacers or chairs before the pour, does very little of its job — a slab reinforced that way often cracks in the same places one with no mesh at all would. Mesh needs to sit within the slab at the correct depth, held there while the concrete goes in, to actually resist the cracking it’s specified to prevent.
