A garage or shed base carries a car or light storage load over a small footprint, which puts it closer to a patio than a driveway in terms of what’s typically specified — a single layer of light mesh in a standard domestic slab, rather than anything heavier.

A142 is the grade most often used for a garage or shed base, typically in a slab around 100–150mm thick depending on whether it’s carrying a car. Where a garage base is built to the same standard as a driveway — because a vehicle drives across both — A193 is sometimes specified instead, matching the driveway it connects to.
What decides it
Whether the base needs to take vehicle loading, what’s stored on it, and the sub-base condition all feed into the specification — a heavy workshop or a base used for machinery storage is a different job to a garden shed on paving slabs, and the mesh grade should reflect that rather than defaulting to the lightest option regardless of use.
